Faculty of Geosciences and Environment

The Faculty of Geoscience and Environment is designed to meet the need to develop the water, mineral and petroleum sectors of Somalia and protect the environment, including the onshore and offshore waters. This Programme is designed to be broad robust covering most geological science fields, water resources, and climate, environmental sciences. It will provide a student a flexibility of specialising in areas of geology, environmental sciences at post graduate levels. Within four years, the BSc. Geoscience and Environment programme is intended to evolve into two separate BSc programmes: Geosciences and environmental science.

Faculty programmes:

a. Bachelor of Science in Geosciences
b. Bachelor of Science in Environmental sciences

BSc in Geoscience

This Geoscience Course provides you with maximum flexibility in module choices and is suitable if you have a wide-ranging interest across the Earth Science subjects. The course offers geology deeply and then is means that assuming pre-requisite module criteria are met, all modules are optional, bar the compulsory Level 3 dissertation module. Because of its high degree of flexibility, this degree is more than geology. Of course, it focuses on geology and extends further into surface materials and their use in geology, in addition to covering surface water resources (hydrology and oceanography) and the atmosphere: climate and the environment.
After completing this course Geoscience graduates gain employment in the fields of mineral exploration and petroleum geology, engineering geology, environmental and hydrogeology consultancies, GIS companies, geological surveys, as well as securing places on Masters and PhD courses. The numeracy, critical thinking and problem solving skills that you will develop on the course are highly valued in a wide range of non-geoscience careers, including teaching, business management, insurance and accounting, banking and finance.

BSc in environmental science

This interdisciplinary degree combines aspects of biology, ecology, geography, chemistry, technology and social science to help you understand the whole picture. This course will develop the scientific and technical knowledge and skills required to investigate ecosystems; to understand fundamental environmental patterns and processes; and to address local and global environmental issues. You’ll study the problems we face in understanding our natural environment and living sustainably.
